What do you do when you have to remove the cup, pull the plug or some other way to reduce the foam while cleaning collection cup?

Have been using one for about a year now. I just pull the plug, remove the cup and give it a good cleaning.

i pulled the plug for a month and then i found that it was too hard to set the flow again. i just close the intake valve and then remove the cup and then open it. what kinda skimmer , mine it the prizm deluxe. i heard the remoras (guy at fish store), just unplug it because he said that he has never changed the flow of his in a year so i guess you have to unplug it.
