OK...I have an APC Back-UPS ES
battery backup/surge protection for my computer.....I have had it a pretty long time..
Does anyone know....when the battery goes bad...does the unit go nuts

It started beeping like crazy, and the battery backup side stopped working
SOOOO...should I search online for a new battery, or look into a new unit?
p.s......the plug in side works still, but I unhooked the while unit

I have gone through a couple APSs at home and work and that is what happens when the battery is shot in mine. I would get a new unit, not a new battery. The prices keep dropping so unless you feel the need to be 'green'
I would just buy a whole new unit.

The software that comes with the UPS should give a status on the battery, but I'd 4 yrs is long enough. You can get the battery at APC and ship your old back to them for recycling.

I just saw that in their website....$29.99 for a replacement battery and they send you a prepaid label for the old one
I had this unit for like 6 years....so I think I got pretty good use out of it then
I don't even know where the software and box is anymore....I probably got rid of it 2 or 3 years ago

At work I order all of our UPS batteries from batterywholesale dot com. Which model UPS is it? Since you said "battery backup side" I'm betting it's a Back-UPS ES something...
I can point you to the right battery, probably cheaper than APC's price.

If you go the web site I mentioned, use the "quick search" to search for APC-179.
That should be it. Make sure to take the old battery out and visually compare it to the web site pics and dimensions before you order. Being in OK, I bet if you order it early tomorrow you can get it by Friday since they are located in Texas.
Sometimes the terminals of the batteries from them are smaller than the ones on the existing batteries. In the "notes" when you order, tell them you need the "faston adapters" They'll send a couple to with no additional charge so you might as well ask for them so you have them.

For $10 more it might be worth going with APC to avoid the hassle of finding a place to recycle those batteries. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to being green but even I can't throw those batteries away in the normal trash.

Don't worry about recycling the battery, any chain parts house will do it for you. Just go hand them the battery.

Just plug it in, turn it on and leave it that way for a couple hours, then see how it works. The battery should be somewhat charged already.

But it beeps constantly??? after turing it on, after a few minutes, th light will flash red, and then it will start beeping....I don;t think that's normal

Refer to this link:

Follow the troubleshooting guides, and also check the "status indicators" table to figure out which condition the unit is ticked off about.
Thanks...I had it plugged into an outlet with it off. I have now turned it on, and the power light is staying green, and so far no beeping :)
I have not plugged anything into it yet, I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to start beeping again....
I think I'll wait about 30 minutes and then plug my stuff into it.
