In your opinion is API test kits as bad as they say or is it that people are not following the directions? I have heard different things.

There may be some confusion about the accuracy of API nitrate kits. They measure nitrate, sheer as some other kits measure nitrate nitrogen. If a correction for this is not made the API kit will seem to read 4 times as high as, for example, Salifert's kit. I am in the process of gathering nitrate kits from various manufacturers to run a comparison.

LOL...When you see a number read 80+ (it can't read any higher then 80 so I added the +) on the API kit, it's a total freak out, since shrimp and other inverts will die at 40 and corals at 20

GeriDoc has given us the reason for the high reading....I thought they were inaccurate, and I wasn't the only one. So if you have a reading of 10 nitrates, and it reads 4Xs higher ... if the kit can only read 80, what good is it? Anything over 20 is off the chart to be measured....

I assure you, I did the test correctly.
