i love my apple macbook but it always seems to overheat, and by the time the fans come on, its already running 170*F. does anyone know of a way to set the fans to come on earlier, say like 140*F? thanks

There is a clip on fan/cooler that you can buy for these that attaches to the back. I've seen them at bestbuy/ compusa...etc

It definately happens to both. It is basically an engineering issue. Depending on how you sit, you may be blocking off the exhaust hole for the laptop. Toshiba had a model that was notorious for this. My girlfriend had one and it was so bad we traded it in on the lemon law.
My laptop I am on now is sitting on my desk and will be running all day. Since it is on my open desk it gets plenty of airflow and never gets too hot. But when I take it home and have on my lap, it will get toasty after an hour of use.

That's true too. We have laptops here at my job and they say (tech support) many of the problems arise from over heating because we have crap blocking the air flow and fan vents on the laptops...

My laptop is on 24 hours a day here and in use in some way probably 7 hours, never had over heating. - put your laptops on flat service and sides open for airflow.

I had a Toshiba that had this exact same problem, among many others. It also was turned in under the lemon law. It was a nightmare! Thank goodness it's gone!! I now have a Sony, and no longer have the problem.
I was told if the fans are dirty, that they would not work effectively and would contribute to overheating. Several times my old laptop was sent in for service, and they would just clean the fans. It did not fix the problem, but it did seem to help temporarily.
I also know they make chiller mats, which is basically a board with built in fans which help dissipate the heat also. They plug into a USB port.
Good Luck!

Hey I work for Apple and I have the $1299 Macbook. I have the same problem with the heatsinc. It is covered under Applecare Protection Plan. You should be able to go to local store or send off to the Depot and they will replace the heatsinc. It does make a noticable difference as far as how hot it gets but even after I have a hard time keeping my portable on my lap. Hence the word "portable" instead of laptop!
There is also a firmware update that addreses the fans. Make sure you do an update and that is gets installed...

Its a 160 or 200 but why not just go for the external drive. You get redundancy an alot more GB for the $$$. Good luck.
