I had a copperband butterfly that erraticated a forest of aptasia and then I sent him back to the LFS. They are tough to keep after they run out of aptasia.

Ok figure why not try so I got 3 peppermint shrimp. Well I didn't have to worry about the CBS. The Bi-color psudochrome tore them up before the CBS even knew they were there.
next thing I knew there were little piles of crabs eating the peppermint shrimp. Needless to say I still have an aptasia problem.

1 psudochrome
3 green chromis
3 PJ cardinals

Been there, done that. If the aptasia is bad, J juice nor boiling water will work. You just can't get it all. Can you pull some of the rock out? Then targeted boiling water or JJ might work. If you can get the rock out, put it in a bucket of tank water, wait for the Aptasia to come out and nail it. I had to do the Copperband butterfly and it was like a dream come true. I bet he ate a 100 stalks in 3 weeks. He ate my tank bald and 5 weeks later I still see a little of it reary it's evil head.

I use lemon juice injections with very good results, I'd say 85%+ kill rate on first hit and almost always gone if they get another dose. A threadfin butterfly may be a good route. A little hardier than the copper bands. Just have a place for him when he's done. Mine eradicated the Aip in less than 2 weeks...and I had a LOT. Time for another treatment.

i do agree that the copper band is an excellent way to rid aptasia but the poster only has a 45 gallon tank

It's only short term. Return him for store credit.

you could try using a calcium buffer, mix it with a little water and put in into a shringe, the stuff i used heats up ,then you inject it into the aptasia while it's hot, it burns the aptasia because it's hot, you have to stay on top of it otherwise it spreads.
good luck

Wouldn't the Tang dislike the Copper band similar shape and all also once the nasties are gone he'll starve or I have to send him back to uncertain fate. I think rock removal and treatment may be the only course. After the expensive dinner my Bi-color had I don't think Live stock is the way to go. Just seems like they florrish after I treat them.

How large of an aptasia will the peppermint shrimp eat? I got one as a hitchhiker that is about 1-2cm across. At first he was hardly noticable but after the rock acclimated boom! He was a large sucker. I only have two others that are very small.
This is a 50gal just finished cycling. I have a few damsels blue and some yellow fin. The blue ones are aggressive and I need to get a trap to get them out (as soon as I get a day off work) In any event. I had some hermit crabs in the tank and about every 4-5 days one will turn up dead. The water param are ph 8.2 sg 1.022 trites 0 trates 0 amm 0
I can only assume someone is picking on them.
