I have the next size down (EV-180) with a mag 9.5 and I love it, by far the best skimmer I have owned and they require very little maintenence. Be careful if you are running it externally, when they start to break in they will overskim like crazy. I choked the air supply back for a few weeks opening it up a little more every week until I finally had it wide open.

I have an EV240 w/Mag 18 on my 125gal. Running it externally too. Yea, during the break-in stage, just give it time. I know it seemed like a bit before the foam tower started to build. Also don't worry if you happen to see the foam tower collapse either. It seems almost anything can cause it, food in the water, your hand/arm in the water, and even the air changing in the room. Should always come back though. Startup settings, I'd say about 1/2 on the air valve and work your way open. The gate valve is pretty something your going to have to adjust to get the water level exactly perfect.
Be prepared for a good bit of maintenance though. I always seem to have to clean the neck every 3-5 days.

I had the same issue until I realized I was running the skimmer too dry, adjusted it to make it a little wetter and now the skimmate doesn't collect in the neck and riser tube as much.

Isn't that a good thing?

aquaknight, do you have a ball valve on the mag 18 to control the amount of flow? if so, about how much goes thru? 1/2, 3/4? reason i ask is, I have a mag 18 sitting round i dont use, was thinking of using that.... or would i be better off with buying a 12? have read that you can overdrive it with the 18 and really kick it up a notch!

There is a good thread over on R.C. dedicated to the AquaC EV skimmers that has a ton of good info you might check it out. If I rember correctly I think most of the people with the EV-240 were running with the Mag 18 and several bought the larger injection nozzle also.

Somewhat, it causes these skimmers to stop producing skimmate, once the neck is dirty the foam has to be very dry to make it into the collection cup.
Before I readjusted my skimmer to be a little more wet I found that if I cleaned the neck every 3 days instead of once a week I would get the same amount of skimmate in 3 days as I did in a week so I effectively doubled my skimmate production just by cleaning the neck more often. Now I can go a 5-7 days and the neck is still mostly clear of skimmate.

No valve on the incoming line from the Mag18. I do have about 2' of tubing though and it snakes through the back of the stand, so that kills a bit of flow. If you have a Mag 18 lying around, I'd definitely give it a shot. I hooked mine up to a Mag 9.5 and it had no where near the performance.

is that an incoming line for a calcium reactor, or did you just plug the line?

Call Aqua C and purchase the 1 inch injector(cost is $10) but the performance will be worth it. These skimmers take back pressure to perform.
