Aquaclean Power Filter 70 to use as Refugium

I was searching threads about HOB refugiums when I came across a comment that said it would be cheaper and work just as well to buy an Aquaclear Power Filter 70 (I have a 28gal JBJ Nanocube) to use as one. Just add some chaeto and a clip on light and it would do it. Does anyone have an opinion on this. I just found a brand new one on eBay for $40. shipped. Would love to have some opinions and if anyone has a better option. Thanks.

I was considering making one but I decided I needed more volume, so I bought a CPR HOB Skimmer/Fuge combo.
But as BTLD said, there are many posts out there about folks making these with good success.

Well I decided to go for it and ordered one - hopefully will get it in a couple of days. My next question would be is it best to just put the chaeto in it or do I put some LS/mud into the bottom - and leave the carbon, etc. running??

Ha ha ha - still got it Joe - I knew that would get you going!!!! I guess the point you are trying to make is it is a refugium not refuge.

Oh Al my good friend I was so enjoying my Port and now you force me to elaborate and I don’t even know what elaborate means. The use of an external or internal but separate from predators vessel was and still is called refugium or refuge from predators. My question to the OP and others is simply why are you adding this refuge. Once we can establish that we can go from their .

I converted a AC50 for my 20H and an AC110 for my 30 breeder. I created a baffle area for filter floss, which I change every few days, and also have a bag of chemi pure elite placed on the bottom of with a small piece of LR on top. Cheato on top. I would advise against mud or sand as the flow can be a little strong even at the lowest setting. Have also heard that LR rubble at the bottom can trap nitrates. Great, inexpensive way to house some floss and carbon while introducing macro algae to your system. Good luck.

Now this is where I need some enlightenment if I take a water sample to test for nitrates that seems to me that nitrates are in our water column now does LR rubble trap nitrates and if so does that mean my testing of nitrates in my water column useless

I'm guessing that he means that the LR rubble could trap organic matter. Which of course would break down into ammonia. Which would be converted to nitrites. Which would be converted to nitrates. I'm also guessing that you already knew this and that I'm just stating the obvious.
I have LR rubble on the bottom of my fuge, but I have filter floss between my DT and the fuge. Hopefully any uneaten food is getting caught by the floss, skimmed out or eaten by the critters in the fuge. Either way, I've never had a nitrate problem with my tank. The skimmer, algae and water changes keep nitrates at undetectable (by my test kit) levels.

I can only say, ya'll are nutty in a very fun way. And I
to you with all this knowledge. So after reading all of the above, hopefully I have it right. A little chemi pure elite, a little filter floss and chaeto only and be done. I'm wanting the refugium because from research, reading and this site, it's a good thing to have for my tank. Honestly, I'm not even sure I can get it to work, but will give it a try. If it doesn't work, the filter will work for the QT tank I'm going to set up since reading the post of what happen to meowser. It's hump day folks, have a great day.
