I know petsmart and ***** sell stuff like this aswell as local stores sometimes.
are you going to have live rock and corals in the tank f so you might think of painting the back of the tank blue or black it gives alot more depth to the tank.

I agree. Its all a matter of personal taste; but when you have real life in a tank, it sure makes the fake stuff look even more fake. Painting works well, so does taping a piece of very dark blue or black fabric; you can't even tell its fabric if you do it right.

all i have is a 8lb live rock and a pencil urchin right now. my tank has been up for about 6 months and i am about to add more live rock, about 30lbs, and finally begin adding some corals/fish, once i figure out exactly what i want to do. as of right now, it looks really plain and i just wanted to get a background up so i don't have to see my wall when looking at the tank.
i think i will look into a blue-ish background then, is there a site that sells em? i'd rather buy one than try and make one myself

i am using krylon fusion flat black to spray paint the back of my new tank. the plastic backgrounds are OK but they tend to get salt creep in between them & the glass which can make them look bad.

I'd go black
It makes all the equipment blend in and, you don't notice it as much.
I think all lfs's sell back grounds. And usually it will be blue on one side and black on the other. That way you can try both and see what you like better.

hoenstly I would paint it those plastic ones just dont look right after a few weeks and hold water behind them and really start to look taky after awhile. a good thick paint job on it and it wil look good for teh life of the tank .

i really don't like the idea of spray painting the glass on my tank, especially knowing how much work it would be to move the tank off it's platform and carry it outside to paint it.
i guess i'll check out some local stores for backgrounds... but don't they go on the OUTSIDE of the tank, not the inside??

yeah outside you dont have to spray paint it though I roller painted my 100 gallon it was way to big to even think about moving outside to paint.

I go to Wally World, get a piece of plain polyester fabric, use a piece doubled fabric and a single piece of duct tape that runs along the entire top edge. Half on the fabric, half along the tank edging.Measure the tank lenght exactly and have your friendly Wal-Mart Sales Associate cut it exact & even. Most folks doubt this, but its really hard to tell this from a good paint job. If you don't like it, you're out about $2 and 5 minitues.
