what are you making the sump out of glass or acrylic?
Either way, I would think not. Regular silicone contains a toxin that leaches into water over time. I'd pick up the aquarium safe stuff from your LFS or online. Better safe than sorry.

is that really true about toxins???????
Some silicones have anti bacterial agents in them for places like bathrooms etc. to keep things like mold and mildew in check..... Be careful and DO NOT get one listed for these uses. Some have UV protectors for outdoor use too. Again a no-no
But a tube that list ingredients as 100percent pure silicone is OK. But for the difference in cost, if not possitive, buy the aquarium stuff. Just be sure to let it cure completely first. and rinse too........ Warren

Yes, No, and Maybe. Different organisms are affected by different things and too different degrees by the same thing, so its really hard to say what will be killed and what will not. But if you kill off all your bacteria, then ammonia levels will increase, which could then kill off everything else ~ you see? Its complicated. Thats why I said "better safe than sorry". Aquarium safe silicon really shouldn't be that more expensive then regular, why take the chance
? As for curing time, the tube should tell you, but if you use the non aquarium stuff, I would give it an extra day or so, just to make sure.
