Aquarium temp ?

Mt 29g was running around 82 to 84 degrees during the day with the PC lighting. Sence I switched to my 75g tank I had the temp at 80 to 82 and then I got my new lighting a 500 watt MH and 4-t5 actinic setup my temp went to 86 to 87 degrees. So last night I dropped the heater temp down. This morning the tank temp was at 78. I also shortened my on time for the MH bulbs an hour to see if this will keep the temps down closer to 80 to 82. Is a swing in temp of 4 degrees ok. My lights are about 11 inches above the water and on legs so it is an open top. Any advice on temp is welcome and maybe lighting schedules for actinic and MH, and I have moonlights also. thanks.

That is too hot. You need to get a fan that blows across the surface of the tank between the tank and the light. Turning down your heater wont do much for the swing in temp.
