Yea if it says dont use it on aquariums then dont. I think that kind of sand clumps up when it gets wet. You want sand that stays powdery when wet if you get what im saying. I believe the vinegar test has something to do with pouring it on a sample and it will fizz. Something like that.

Well, since Southdown was bought out the new packaging from Yardright and Old Castle say "Not for aquarium use".
That's not neccesarily a good indicator.

have you tried going to the Durascape website? (if there is one...) They would have more information, like I said, if there is a site. Could give that a try....

The play sand was $4 for 40 lbs. At the LFS it is $5 for 5.. I read on another post about the yardright sand and the other couple brands. Form what i read about those this is the same stuff. I will do the vinigar test when i get home.. The yardright and southdown sand both say on them that they are not for use with home aquariums but people have been using them for quite some time.. Someone was saying that they ahve to put this on there beceause it is so much cheaper then the "Aquarium Sand" and the manufacturers were getting harrased.
Hopefully it is the right stuff...
If not my LFS also sells live sand for $1 / LB planning on seeding with that but dont really want to spen $80 on sand...

Much. I added Play sand/white gardening sand (Made by Oldcastle) from Wal-Mart for under $3 for 18lbs. Going to seed it with a bag of LS later.

That looks like the bag I bought. the fact that it says "not for aquariums" is not to be worried about ... Do the vinegar test. for those of you who dont know... place a few drops of vinegar (acetic acid) or you could use Muriatic acid (HCl)... if the sand "fizzes or bubbles" then it is a calcium carbonate sand... that is what you want. You will also notice that on the bag of "white" sand it says contains silica..... silica sand doesnt "foam"... While the stuff I just bought at HD doesnt say southdown you may see that the manufacturer is Old Castle sand in Pennsylvania ... you will find this in the fine print on the bag. So, if it foams in the acid test, you are good :D

Hey Guys Did the Vinegar test.. The Durascape wite play sand is good to go  , lots of fizzing. It isnt quite as fine as the expensive stuff but i guess that depends on your taste. As for me I am a really basic begginer and have a feeling I will be learning alot from several mistakes so I will save teh expensive stuff for later.
I a planning on getting some live sand tommorow I have 80 lbs of White sand and was thinking 10lbs to seed it. Can anyone tell me if that is enough or if I need more.
Also how should I layer it to seed it should I put the white sand down and then teh live sand on top or mix it all together... I imagine i put the live on top so i dont smoother whatever is living in there but I could use some confirmation.

Good point it just take the liability off of the company, so it isn't a good indicator not to use it....

I tried the sand from home depot and i would not recommend it. It clouds your water like heck. I tried clearing it with water changes and carbon but never really cleared up...you get what you pay for I guess...get the live sand in the bags...so much better/prettier...cloudiness goes away in minutes
