I am new at MH, I am sure a different bulb will be needed. I need a light for my frag tank so the looks of the light are not important. this this one work? Will I need a different bulb? If it will work how far from the top of the tank should it be set? This is a floodlight from Homedepot.

No all Metal halides are not Equal!!!
Your frags won't do well and might even die under those type of bulbs, they are not recommended for reef tanks due to color output is on the red to yellow spetrum which will only be good for growing hair algae stick with 5k or better bulbs
Incandescent lighting

Not efficient lighting uses more electricity and therefore costs more to use. Incandescent bulbs will
need to be replaced more often than fluorescent bulbs.
Tank temperature fluctuates - Incandescent lighting gives off a lot of heat and can raise the temperature of the aquarium as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Also when the light is turned off the temperature in the tank can drop as much as 10 degrees F. This temperature fluctuation can cause severe stress
Mecury Vapor

Mercury Vapor lights are mainly used for freshwater planted tanks, and while they are great for such, they are not used for reef tanks anymore
Sodium vapor lamps

These lamps come in two varieties, high pressure sodium and low pressure sodium, the light they output is pure yellow, and is all but useless in terms of aquaria
