Are any large angelfish reef safe?

Has any one found any large angelfish to be reef safe? I have a 180, not too many corals, and am really wanting to add one some day.... I am being told by people that none are safe, but that they are hit and miss, so I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck with large angelfish in a reef, and what kind.

the key is to keep them well fed. their large fish and if their hungry, they will most likely pick on corals. i mean its possible you feed him 3 times a day, keep him well fed and he may still pick. like you said its hit or miss.

check out the Genicanthus angels such as: japanese swallow tail, lamarck's, etc. these won't bother corals.

They are not reef safe. I have a 180 as well and started with my angels as juvies. So I wanted the best of both worlds, coral and angels. Well for a while my Emperor and Blueface left everything alone, but my french started right in. She taught my others how to graze. After a year or so, I had over $2K worth of beautiful coral, all show pieces and things were going well. I would miss a few zoos, but it was ok.
Once the emperor changed color and the angels got to about 5-6 inches, all hell broke loose. They ate all my mushrooms and zoos first. Then they ate all the leather and tree corals. Next came the beautiful stuff. 3 huge different colored hammers, a huge colony of 9 heads of frogspawn, and finally a giant torch were obliderated in the matter of weeks.
All I could do was say "oh well they told me so." Needless to say my tank is FOWLR now. The angels are lucky that I love them or they would be gone.
I picked up a nano a few months back and have gone nuts with that...think about your long term goals of the tank before you jump in head first.
Good luck

Yes. All angels will pick at coral. The extent depends on how big of a pig they are. My Emperor (6") doesnt pick at much, but can do damage. My blueface (6") will eat everything you put in front of it. He has eaten anemones, leathers, zoas, frogspawn, torch, hammer, mushies, you name it.

I had over $2000 of coral in my 180 with an emperor, blueface, and french. They left everything alone for about 6 months and then they got hungry. It took them less than a month to chew through everything. I can take pictures of all the coral (Live Rock now) that they chomped

Mine did. Within 2 minutes of being put into the tank a feather duster was the first thing he ate.
