surface agitation by using PH and such work well at oxygenating water as well as skimmers.
saltcreep is where salt drys on surfaces that arent normally wet and you get a layer of salt usually around hang on filters and around the top of tank and the center brace. nasty stuff not hazardous or anything like that just unsightly ungly and can cause damage to walls and floors.

For a 55, you will probably be safe with 2 powerheads. Just purchase ones for 55 gallon aquariums, or alittle more if they don't sell that. With bubblers and salt creep, my aanswer is no! bubbles stink. THey're loud, they cause devastating sat creep, and they are not necessary at all. With a skimmer or powerhead, you will be fine.:)
