The owner of the fish store that i go to says corals aren't very easy to take care of. Is it true.

Harder to take care of than a dog. Easier than taking care of a baby :p

There harder than fish only but easy once you get the hang of it. It just means that your water needs more testing and you keep an eye on more things. It also means tighter tolerances on the things you watch now. ie salt. In a Fish only tank you keep the salt at 1.021-1.026 in a reef its 1.024-1.026.
But yet there is more to do. Thats why we say start with shrooms and polyps then softees.

If you're just keeping softies it's really not that hard. Just get them some decent lighting and keep the nitrates low. Other than that, get you salinity correct and try to keep the PH up and temp consistent and you will have no problem keeping softies. If you get into stony corals it gets a little harder (in some cases, some are still easy).
I've lost more fish than I have soft corals.

I've read some good advice here, but finding a decent source for the corals has been most important for me. Having found that source, and educating myself about all corals I buy, I've had a great deal of luck with them since I got started six months ago.
And the great thing is that you can always trade them with other hobbyists and propagate them for trade-ins at your LFS. Not to mention that I haven't yet heard of a maximum coral limit for a tank like you have with fish.
One thing I've learned for certain: if the knowledgeable folks/literature say it's not for your tank (i.e. it needs MH and you've got PC's), don't buy it.
Good luck!
