Are moonlights necessary?

Nope.
I usually turn mine off all the way. I Usually just turn them on if I just want to check something at night or feed something nocturnal.

the moon lights can be beneficial to the inhabitants and to the owners it obviously makes it easier for us to see at night but moonlights also more accurately reproduce natural reef conditions. This could benefit corals, fish, invertebrates and so on...

Beneficial how? I am not saying your wrong by any means but I am just curious.

They say they are beneficial because most fish spawn at night, and the moonlights help them to feel like they are having a "natural" light cycle.....
LOL...does that make sense?

that was exactly what i was gonna say! moonlights make fish feel and corals to that they are in the open ocean!

When the moonlights went out in one of my tanks my lionfish hit his head numerous times in the morning when the lights would come on. Stopped it totally when I fixed the moonlights. There was ambient light in his room too, so you think the sunrise would be adequate for him to adjust. But he did NOT like the lights coming on suddenly.

It's not. I wouldn't use the crutch and say it's 'benefittal' to justify them (what the retailer does).
If you like them and enjoy them, great, money well spent.

Yeah that makes sense but sometimes there is little to no moon out.
Correct. One or three LEDs sitting uptop a tank isn't going to recreate anything. Moonlights are a product for you the use. If you like them, great, money well spent.

The same argument of "sometimes there is no moon out" goes with our main daylight lights too.
Our lights are equivalent to, what, 10 hours of sunlight at noon with no waves or clouds.
Completely unrealistic.
That is why a lot of emphasis recently has at least gone into turning on actinics at a different time than full daylight lights. That simulates the "twilight" period that is actually critical on a reef.
So none of this is perfect. IMO, moonlights are a very nice advance in the hobby and do offer a bit more "realism" better than no moon ever.
Tanks were kept for years without them. But IMO, these small steps are making tanks a bit more realistic and so may help the inhabitants of the tank in small ways.
