oh ok. I thought it was all about the wattage.
What brand lights do you have? Does it get very hot where you need a fans and such?
I have a canopy..so I am scared about using MH..not to mention mercury vapors..
thanks for the help!!

So Cela..what is it exactly that I would need as far as lighting if I were to do a 75 gallon 4ft wide tank. I want to have the ability to do LR/LS. and fish for now...but then do anemones and clams later without having to worry too much about heat and my canopy burning up...
thanks again..I truly appreciate the help

really for anemones and clams you will need Metal halides, which are very hot and have mercury, but you know that you could get a long tentacle plate instead.

Then I can just do the 4 x 65 watts instead?
That is really nice too. I am considering probably starting a fish only tank with LR/LS and some easy to care for invertabr....
I think since I am n ew...that may be the way to start for now...
What do you think?

The guy at the LFS said I would just need the 48" 4 x 65 watt orbit for soft corals..
Would the 4 x 96 be too much in a tank with mostly fish?
I asked him about the 96's but he said that I don't need that much...I thought that the 96 would be better...but I do not want to burn anything..

fish don't really care how bright it is as long as it isn't blinding. You won't burn anything, the only thing that would burn under that light are the softees and only if you put em at the top of the tank, and if it is to much light they will move outta the way. And you will need the 96's if you want the long tentacle plate coral, or hammers, or frogspawn, ...

GREAT!!! Since it stands on legs..Do you think it would be bad to still get the 36" 4x 96 lights instead of the 48" 4 x 96's?
I assume I would not need to adjust anything being that it is just sitting on top of the tank. I kind of wanted to use the smaller width just because the 48"'s have the fans on the sides...and I will have a canopy which will not allow the proper ventilation (although LFS says it would)...there is nowhere for the fan to blow on the sides..but I figure the 36" would allow 6 inches on each side open..
Thanks again!!

I really would not get into this hobby if it weren't for all you experts who helped me.

yep, that is also a good reason(the ventilation) :joy: . Oh and that 6 inches on the side you will probably be able to get mushrooms and put them their. When you get the 36" ones you can just set the legs on top of the glass!

oh and im always here to learn and help! :jumping:

oh, you mean I can do the shrooms where the light is not as strong since there is no direct lighting above it?
that makes me so very happy.
so I will start with the 4 x 96's in 36"width and just do a Fish with LRand LS for now.
Then when I get established and learn more..I will be bugging you again for info on the other things...lol

bug me whenever you want! Also i might suggest when you first get corals, I reccomend getting mushrooms first, and as an experiment put the shrooms all the way to the right or left, and if they move or start to deteriate then i guess there wasn't enough light, but if they don't then you will be able to have shrooms there!

So basically I can try to put them there since they do not need as much light. then just watch them. Do you think the tank will look strange? I assume that is still alot of light even if not directly on the two sides a few inches.
Do feathers need much light?

I am not saying you need MH lighting only suggesting it over your 450 $ worth PC's. I have seen a couple of 260 watt PC's locally for 100$ used so yeah 450 with the 96 watt bulbs is overpriced. You could always go with four T-5's. There are online sites that offer t-5's email me at bradedward29@hotmail.com and I will hook you up with more sites than you can handle. One of the more expensive sites has t-5's 4 X 54 watt with lunar lights for 269.00 not including shipping or the lights. I am looking at lighting for a 120 and based upon what you said you were wanting to keep the lighting is the one thing I would skip on. LFS markup there dry goods equimpent like lighting but many are great for buying fish.
hope this helps and by no means am I an expert but you will have alot better luck with a clam/anemone and more choices with better lighting.

Ps. You would not have to get a chiller with MH in a 75 gallon tank and you would only need one MH for what I believe you want to do and two VHO's or T-5 actinics. I would get a 175 watt MH and the two t-5's/VHO and have 300 or so watts of very good lighting at nearly the same price as the PC's your LFS is charging.

You can still get PC's becasue they are not bad and are good for keeping softies but for a wider range of animals I would opt for MH or T-5. I know a couple of people that have a 150 watt MH over there 30's and our LFS has a 150 watt MH over a 12 nano SPS.
