Are RI/DO Sytems Absolutely Necessary?

Is an RI/DO system an absolute must?
In my opinion ......... yes
I've ran saltwater tanks here using our tapwater and I've ran tanks using RO/DI water.
Using RO/DI water eliminates some of the headaches I fought when I used tapwater. Our tapwater here is somewhat unpredictable - and it's not practical to test each and every batch of tapwater ( top offs and saltmixing ).
A home RO/DI unit is about as easy as it gets - and if the unit is maintained properly ....... the freshwater quality "is" more predictable IMO.

how do you get your tap water tested?

I have our local Water and Conservation District test it. I also have a test kit.

Got to have one before hair algae takes completely over.
Sorry JDLane, did not mean to butt in!! Maybe someone can tell us where to get a unit at a half way decent price!!

Look for reverse osmosis (the RO of RO/DI)
I'd also NOT call your local HD or any such store as they are outrageous and look specifically on line .... like a major online auction site as mentioned earlier
