Are Seahorses stationary Fish or Not???

When I set up my seahorse tank I envisioned quite mild horses bobbing gently in the flow hanging from their hitching posts.
Then I brought Valiant home. He is anything BUT stationary. He loves to swim all over the tank. Plays in the bubbles, reminds the fire goby who's in charge, and just 10 minutes ago he got a hold the temp themometer cord, pulled it of the glass suction cup and all, and proceed to poke it, drag it, and basically play with it. After a few minutes he lost interest and dropped the cord.
The only time he's stationary is when he goes to sleep! He curls up around the base of the corky and stays there until the lights come on at 7 am. And then he's up and at em. Pod hunting, pestering the goby, riding the bubble flow, or following me around hoping for a mysis hand out! Awesome fish!!!!! :happyfish

yes theyre not "stationary", mine always went around, he would occasionally play in my powerheads jet stream (dont worry it was low flow) got on my corals, even played "whack a mole" w/ my quad of garden eels

rykna u make me want to build a seahorse tank

It sounds like your having alot of fun with it.
Are sea horses and pipefish reef safe?
Maybe I can get one of those 29gallon bio-cube tanks.

They are predators.
They hunt.
It makes me laugh that people see seahorses as anemic and fragile animals. Given proper care, just like other animals, they are truly amazing.
They require commitment that some fish don't, but many other fish require specifics, too (TANG, WRASSE, MANDARIN, SEA STAR, CORALS). What's the difference, when you get down to the basics? Personal preference is all.

I guess it depends on the horse, two of mine are all over the tank, yet the other 3 are more on the rocks hunting all day. It is hilarious watching them play in the flow, I have those attachments on my power-heads that turn..... They flip around in circles.

You can keep wild caught seahorses and pipefish together. They both require live food (you can train WC=Wild Caught, CB=Captive Bred) seahorses to frozen mysis, but it is not a choice for the new seahorse keeper.
If you want to keep seahorses, buy ONLY CB.

They are awesome but listen to PonieGirl. I thought I was ready to take on seahorses.....man was I wrong.......21 years of fish experience plus 3 in salt......helped, but having seahorses is a whole new ballgame, like ponie said once you get it down it's awesome! It will take another 2 months probablly before I can stop hovering over the tank, testing and rechecking. :happyfish
Valiant, ofcourse, has taken advantage of this by following me around and begging. Just like kids, fish know a sucker when they see one!!!!

I always thought Seahorses would just sit stationary too. That's fantastic to hear, definitely a future project of mine. One point in time I almost kept a dwarf tank, but no way would I have the time to hatch BBS all day everyday >_<. I love hearing about Valiant, Rykna, it's so inspiring!
Keep it up!

i did have a fairly aggresive seahorse once, i actually had him with a blue tang, anyhow i was feeding my star fish one day , by cuting a piece of shrimp in half and putting it in the tank.well my seahorse swam over and suck up the half inch piece of shrimp i put in there. it was the strangest thing ive ever seen with him.
