So yesterday i topped off my tank with about 2.5 gallons of water (yeah it was low ive been really busy) so i added the water and my dad made me a fish tank lid cuz i didnt have one and i thought thats why mt water was going so low...
so my tank has its new lid on and this morning i woke up and it looks like i didnt even add any water to it yesterday. So now i either think im going crazy or is the lid making the water evaporate fasterr? My temp is at 80* is t to high?

d
well i just searched every corner cuz that was what i thought and i cant find a leak. My tank is a 55gal and my lights are on anywhere from 6-12 hours a day depending if i leave and forget to turn them off but them runing 12 hours is very unlikely. but mostly about 8 hours a day on average.

What kind of lights are they? Somthing low heat like PC's or are the high heat lights like Metal Halides. When I switched from pc's to mh's my water evaporation doubled, litteraly. went from 1.5 gpd to 3 gpd, on an open top 90gal w/ 20 gal sump.

Well to be honest i have no idea...i inherited this fish tank from my sister. Everything was included i dont know whatkind of lights they are...The end of thely says coral light 65w something. So maybe thats what it is.
But usually it never goes down this fast, ive had it for over a month and usually i can top it off fwith 2.5 gallons every week and today i woke up and it looks like i didnt yesterday i didnt change anything but the new lid. I thought that was supposed to help keep the wateri n..

It could be due to the weather also mine varyys widely with the weather. Some times I can get by topping it off once a day and sometimes twice a day. It sounds like you have pc lights. Are the tubes shaped like long U's?

Temp. has some effect but mostly its the humidity. The lower humidity = more evaporation.

Yup, gets cold, close up the house, turn on the furnace, dry out the air, = more evaporation from the available water source.

I personally go through about 3 gallons of water a day due to evaporation in the winter. It was about 1-2 in the summer. The dryer air definitely does make water evaporate faster, in fact, if you live somewhere where there's almost 100% humidity all year round, you'd have almost no evaporation at all since there's no where for the water to go.

I dont know about that. I live in florida (high humidity). I get about 1-1.5 gallons a day in evap. I only have a 55. But then I am not sure of the humidity in my house though. I will have to look when I get home.
