are you a jerk?
went in to a police station today to visit a friend in jail
had about a dozen cops walk through. I am a sociable person that likes everyone so I try to strike up a conversation 4 wouldnt agnowledge me just nose up and keep walkin chest all puffed out and the ones that did talk were rude and very unpleasant.really bothered me is it the power do they train you to act like that. or it just happens over time. or are there good ones just not located around my area.

The majority of them are just jerks on a power trip .
The few that I know of more on a personal level are by far some of the lower members of the human race.

almost all cops around here are A-holes and will pull you over and try to give you a ticket for anything they can pull out of their a**. really unfortunate to have those types of people "protecting" us.

The columbus police here are horrible. I got a ticket on wednesday for "Making an improper right turn". The prick didn't even explain what was "improper" about it.

I've heard some stories from cops around here. They seem to like to play with dead bodies...
Yeah...they aren't very sociable people from my experiences. They just give off a certain vibe that gives you the impression that they are better than you. Stereotypes aside, there is a cop in my neighborhood that is incredibly nice and sociable. It isn't really their job to be nice... Maybe all the monotony and the lack of need to be nice causes this to happen

My dad was a Ohio State Highway Patrolman, a very dedicated and professional group of law enforcement officers.
Still, there's bad apples in every group.

I know some really cool cops.....but there are a lot that have the power trip thing going on. I'd say my experience is 50/50.

It's a pretty thankless job and I guess it takes a certain type of person. The same way I wouldn't expect the garbage-men to write a pulizer-prize novel, I wouldn't expect cops to win saint of the year, especially cops who work the prison and deals with all the deadbeats there.....

My husband is one and he doesnt believe in tickets. Unless your speeding in a school zone ofcourse. He lets people go all the time.
I dont like the steriotyping here

Ya gotta remember that cops see people at the worst times of their lives; a crime committed, deaths or injuries, while incarcerated, collisions, etc. The only time we call the police is when there is a problem of some sort. If all you saw out of most people was the down side, you might become a little jaded as well. For the most part, all they hear is lies and incomplete truths, they learn to read through it and weed out the BS, but this tends to make them a bit more cynical than the average joe. Not trying to defend any actions or attitudes, just a way of understanding them.
That said, it's not "them" the people but the uniform. Most cops I know are very cool people but when you put on that uniform, you are a target of sorts, and the attitude is a defense mechanism to keep them shielded to a certain extent. I train and shoot with quite a few and out of uniform, they really are just normal people, a bit more cynical than most but this is understandable.
The attitude (or perceived attitude) is also a necessity for a cop; you don't really want to see a weak cop, a weak cop is confused and not in control of himself (or herself) and this is not something we want in law enforcement officials. We want them in control (of themselves at least,) confident in their ability to handle any situation, etc. In your example of a jail, guards there have to be in control. They are walking around with a high number of convicted criminals who would walk all over them if the guards appeared weak.
In short, they are not really "allowed" to have a bad day at work, they cannot allow personal situations to affect their professional lives so you put on a front of confidence and control. Just know that underneath the uniform, most are regular people, just like you and me; some are saints, some are sinners, but most are good people just doing a job.

my mother in law is a lieutenant and is the sweetest officer ever.. unless you do something stupid and she flat out tells you just how stupid you are, in a very rude way. Otherwise shes a sweet heart, very few officers keep their "head" once they become a cop. We have a close family friend who also is still an amazing person, great to everyone he knows personally.. hes a jerk of a cop too. My brother in law was an amazing person, a year after being on the force he was a jerk, no way around it... it is in no way the uniform, its all him as a person now. I dont even enjoy being around him anymore.. its horrible. My MIL says alot of officers get like that after spending a bit of time on the force. I think its individualized, honestly.. unless your family, they dont *need* to be nice to anyone. their job is to PROTECT you.. not be your friend.

I agree, I've met jerks in all sorts of places, and all sorts of jobs. So there are some that are cops no doubt...
But the job they do? Come on, incredible. Could die at work today...a target, hated by people often as a general rule (see this thread!), misunderstood in many cases. What do they have to look for all the time? Crime. Criminals. Terrorists. Child Molesters. Problems.
If your job is to look for stuff like that/ Yeah, that would get me down a bit over time. It would make me suspicious of people. I don't blame them. Some are jerks...but I suspect most are just wary.
Heck I WISH there was a cop sitting at the school zone here every day.

Best experience I ever had with law enforcement, I was running late for work one morning several years ago. I was going about 70mph in a 55 zone. I meet a Louisiana State Trooper who quickly turns around and pulls me over. I am thinking here comes a ticket for sure.
Out of the trooper cruiser pops a youngish, blond, very attractive female trooper. Asks to see my license while I plead my case. She tells me she understands, gives me back my license, advises me to take it easy and sends me on my way. She was extremely pleasant. I was flabbergasted.
Worst experience ever was being ticketed by a local male city cop with an attitude who looked about 17 years old for going through a "red" light that was in fact "yellow" when I went through it. The guy was a jerk. I knew better that to argue with him so I didn't even try. Ticket cost me $225.oo.
