I was wondering if they can ever go bad. I am about pick up a used one for half price.
Get new. The 10$ you save is not worth loosing a 50$ fish or 100$ coral.
Just My view on it.

Just to answer your original question. There are not many moving parts on a refractometer to go bad (optical ring, the bimetal strip that expands and contracts for temp compensation and the hinge that covers the sample) .IMO if you are getting a good deal go for it

Ya its a $90+ dollar meter. And he wants $50. He said he has the box, manuals, receipts. Everything. Its a good meter. He kept it when he tore down his 7 tanks and moved cross country. He took it with him because he thought he was going to get back in this hobby.

I say go for it. Long as it looks in good condition. You might have to re-calibrate it, but that's not a problem.
Have fun!
