Are yellow polyps hard to keep?

I am wondering because I just tried my second rock of them, and they died within weeks like my first ones did. The zoos right next to them are fine, as are the rest of my corals.

what ive found is the more light and flow the better for these corals

Many fish and crabs shrimps ect. will eat them and only them in a reef when other wise said to be safe. Its like they are a candy or something....a drug....haha

I think dogs on the right track. If I am not mistaken they are in the aptasia family so you may have hitchhiker that finds them appetizing or if you have a peppermint shrimp it could be whats putting them on the decline also.

I have found that they need regular feedings of reef chili or cyclo-peeze. Other than that they are thriving in my system under PC's and med. flow.

My wife brought home a rock w/ about 20 polyps of yellow and 4 polyps of brown/green ctrs on it, the next day all but one yellow were gone. It was small and on the other side of the browns. I figured either something ate them and didn't get that one because of it being "sheltered" by the browns, or shaded by them due to they were under MH at the LFS and I have PC's. The browns have begun to grow though, so not a total loss. Caught a nudi last night that is suppose to eat zoo's, but would he eat one type and not the other?

This has to be how you guys are losing them, because I'm such a newbie with this and mine live. It's my first and only coral so far. I've had the frag get knocked off the rock it was sitting on by something while I was at work. It was face down in the sand when I got home. Picked it up, accidentally touching some of the polyps and put it back up on the rocks. It's fine. I have it in moderate flow. Unfortunately, they haven't spread yet, but if I haven't killed them they can't be difficult to keep, lol. Has to be something eating them.

Better watch how you touch some of these corals, especially zoos. They are very toxic and if you ever get a metal taste in you mouth after handling them call 911. No kidding after watching the propagation clip on here by Eric B. I went and bought a box of surgical gloves.
The ocean is known to have some of the most deadly toxins in the world, I never thought that included corals, but makes sense now that I'm in the hobby.

Yeah, I'm planning on getting gloves. Also, planning on getting zoos after seeing some of the pics on this site.

I first got a rock of yellow polyps on it about 8 months ago. I had 5 pepermint shrimp and noticed that they were munching on my yellow polyps. Maybe they had them confused for aptasia? They ate them down to about three polyps so I caught all of the shrimp (not an easy task) and took them back to the LFS. Since then the polyps did ok and in the last three months they have started to really spread. I think I have about a dozen of them now. I have heard that they like to be fed a lot. I feed mine three times a week with brine shrimp.

Yellow colony polyps MUST be fed. They share the nutrients,so you only have to feed a few polyps. Peppermint shrimp sometimes eat them.

I agree and disagree depending on what you mean by feed. My budy has them and they spred like wildfire. He only uses Kent phyto for corals. He gave me a big batch and most of them died in no time. I fed the remaining and they are still alive. So I don't know what they need. Also, I asked my neighbor who does well with most things (as far as I knew) and when I asked him if he wanted some yellow polyps he said no because they dies on him.

They need meaty food items..his may be catching food when he feeds his fish.
