There's an emergency in your tank...... how much aged saltwater do you have on hand to make a water change? Enough? Any?

5-10 gallons of seawater always around, an empty 10g tank, plus a 5 gallon nano that has been running with no fish for months. If a tank were to spring a leak (knowck on wood!!!) or whatever I think that would be enough to house the critters for 24 hours.

I keep them in water carboys. Some are closed up while others are bubbling. I drill holes in the back vents and run the rigid airline tubing through there so I can leave the big cap on. Keeps the ants out and helps with evap and pollutants. It's good until used.
I have about 50g on hand... maybe more.
I'm going to start storing the water in the thin tall portable water 6 gallon thingy. I'll be able to store a lot more. In the garage I have one of those 50g water storage drums.

I had to look up what a water carboy was
with a 225G, 29G, and 54G....Ithink I would need at least 30G....if not 50G's. I have NO clue where or what I would do with it

I have no water on hand. I would have to go to the LFS with my 5g jugs for water in an emergancy, I have 8 of them...in the middle of the night, I would be up the creek.
I have two 37g plastic cans for FISH ONLY that I use for water changes, I would salvage what I could from my main tank to those tubs so the critters could live...if there was a slow leak.
I have no room for storage, no basement, not even in the garage, which would freeze anyway.
I have learned the hard way to not putts with the tank in the middle of the night when all the stores are closed.
I work night shift and it is easy for me to start something in the middle of the night.

6 gals for my 72 bow ready most any time. I'm going to run out due to the rain. Maybe this week I can go get 75 gals from Scripps. Rain messes up my water source.

I also have a genny in the garage for power outages.

How is that water working out for you anyways? I wish I knew I could get free SW from Scripps when I was attending UCSD. I'm planning on moving back to SD at the end of the year and was thinking of using Scripps as a free water source.

I have about 25 gallons in a rubbermaid trash can, with a powerhead in it. About 20 gallons of R/O water. Then I fill up 5 gallon buckets with salt water if I can. My Mom still has a bunch of my clothes in my old closet. Been out of the house for about 12 years now. I should probably go move it, poor Mom.

with the small tank I have now I keep ZERO emergency water presently but I have a fishless biocube 14g so it would have to be two emergencies to at least not spare the fish. I'm glad I kept a 35g saltwater bin when my 100g broke otherwise NOTHING would have been saved but because of it everything but a single fish I didn't find under a rock survived and so did all the rest of the livestock (and even the liverock, sand and snails I could dig up made it unscaved until I got sell them off).

Well I keep a 35 gal hooked to my RODI and it stays full but is always in circulation. I have been on and off with the salt water in my second 35 gal. So if I hear you peeps you say you can store ready made salt water for long periods?
How long and is this a must to have it sealed so evaporation doesnt change the salinity?

It's great. Certainly appreciated when it was time to fill our 72. We avoid it after heavy rains to be sure we don't get a load of stuff that was just washed into the ocean, but I havn't heard of anyone actually having a problem with it. I think it's just that everyone is avoiding the possibility of getting polluted water. As far as I know, Scripps still uses the water for Birch Aquarium after rains. Of course, they can constantly renew the water at Scripps...not like hobbyists that have a closed water column.
Here's a link to info on how to get the water...
