Assembling A DIY Stand

Does anyone know what kind of hardware I should use to fasten all the pieces of 4x4 and 2x4 in the first diagram on this page below.
Also, in the last diagram on the page, what kind of wood would be most aesthetically pleasing to look at to cover up the 4x4 frame?

I recommend wood screws. They'll give you more strength and will allow you to get a better square and level. as far as woods, red oak, cherry and maple are going to have the nicest grains. Oak is probably the easier and least expensive to work with of those three. Besides that you amy want to consider birch or white pine. I'm not a fan of southern yellow pine for the outsides.

This is for my new AGA Pre-Drilled 75 Gallon.. Dimensions are 48" x 18" x 20". By the way, in the design, when the tank is sitting on the stand, there is a 1 inch excess of wood visible making a border around the base of the tank. Is 1" enough? That would leave the tank with 2.5-3" of 4x4 to sit on.

Something to consider! you may want to consider using 2"x4"s instead of 4"x4"s. The stand will be a hell of lot easier to move around and will easily support a 75 gal.
