can you people that use (or have used in the past) Astrea snails give me your opinion on them as an all around algae eater? i bought 10 mexican turbos about a month or so ago and they're all dead, lost the last one the other day. my wife likes the look of the astrea snail better than the mexican turbos. also thinking of getting a red serpent star, can anyone give me some info on them? how many for a 55 gal? are they a pretty hardy starfish?

Astreas are almost as good at eating diatoms as the Mexican Turbo Grazers. But, if you don't acclimate them right they will die just like your other snails did.
red serpent stars are great scavengers. two for a 55 would be good.

I purchased some astrea snaails from SWF and I was really surprised how well they cleaned up the algae. Just make sure you acclimate them slowly for the best chance of survival. I would go with them.

I have had the best luck with astrea snails, I have 4 or 5 different types in my reef now and the astrea seem to do the best job of cleanning. Good Luck
