How do you attach a PVC pipe to the return pump? What about to the bulkheads on the bottom of the tank?

what kind of pump??? Mine is a mag 24 and it has a threaded output for a pvc fitting.
as far as the bulkheads, on mine the pvc just slid up into it and I glued em....maybe some pics?

Most pumps have a threaded outlet. Just find the appropriate fitting from Lowe's. If it doesn't have a threaded fitting then buy a pvc pipe that is just slightly bigger than the pump so that the pipe will slide snugly over the pump's outlet. Wrap some teflon around the pump outlet and slide the pipe over it so that it fits tightly.

Same here mine was threaded, I just had to buy some bushing and another adapter from Lowes in order to get it to fit onto my 1-1/2" pvc return plumbing. That barb doesn't come off? If not, I would assume that you can use flexible pvc and clamp it in some manner. And I have a Mag 18

If the barb is a permanent fixture, and you want to hardpipe it, then you could get a fitting with a matching barb on one end and appropriate threads or join (If you're going to glue). Then you'd have to get a short piece of vinyl tubing and clamp the two barbs end to end, the tubing may only be three or so inches.
I would guess that if the two ends of the barbs were touching, then it would reduce friction as opposed to having a gap where the waterflow might be turbulent or cavitation might form bubbles.

I have never seen a pump that had a permanent barb fixture. Most of the time the fixture is pressed onto the end of the pump. It may take some effort but they do pull off (or unscrew) leaving a standard fitting behind.
