auto top off system....can i do this?

Ummm, i don't think the project would cost anywhere near $80. I have found the floats on ---- for about $10 I just don't want to order it. If I order the pump its $12, air tube for a couple bucks and for $25 I am all set. The float acts as a switch. When the float is at the top, the switch is off. As the water evaps, the float lowers, turning the "switch" on which activates the pump. This pumps water from a 5 gal bucket to the tank. As the water rises, the float rises, flipping the switch off. Makes sense.

I am not handy at all. So I either pay someone to make something, or I just buy it out right. So if the float acts like a switch...

I have the JBJ ATO like flower... works good but I have to have an airline bubbling under the sensor to keep tripping it because it like to go into "default" mode and stops pumping.. but the bubbler resets the sensor every so often so it's no longer an issue... but what a pain to figure out. The JBJ ATO could work better... but with the bubbler works great -- just shouldn't have to need to do that.
