So vgl12 this is why a tang will not work long-term in a 29gal.
1) Tangs graze continuously. The amount of rock in a 29gal will not provide enough algae for an adult tang to eat. Unless you plan on throwing in a sheet of nori every day...
2) Tangs are openwater fish and need plenty of room to swim. In the wild tangs swim from outcropping to outcropping picking on algae. They are not like gobies that cling close to the rock structure and rarely venture out. The 6' minimum rule is an ok guidline, but not a concrete rule. Bristletooth tangs like the Kole do not need as much room as something like a Naso or Sohal.
3) Tangs are messy. With the amount of waste an adult tang can produce, you will have to keep up with large frequent water changes in order to keep water parameters in line. It doesn't take much to make a small tank dirty.
4) Juvenile (< 2") tangs have a much higher mortality rate than larger tangs.

I defy anyone, who believes keeping a Tang in a 29 gallon tank, to respond intelligently to this post. It sums up the reasons not to try it very well.
Can it be done, yes. Will your Tang outgrow your tank? Probably not. It most likely will suffer from malnutrition, be sickly, and stay stunted until it dies....
Can you keep a horse in a barn for its entire life? Sure. Should you? No, not at all.
Justifying keeping a Tang in a Nano tank by saying "people here don't believe you should keep a tang unless you have a tank the size of the ocean" is poor justification indeed.
If you must try it, for the love of everything in this hobby you better have QT'd everything in your tank first. Tangs are notorious for attracting the Ich parasite. A stressed Tang in a small Tank virtually assures an Ich outbreak if the parasite is present in your system.

JMO, but I think ppl are making a big deal out of this. I understand the size isnt right for the fish, but who cares. Its a fish, it may die, it may not, regardless of if its stressed out or not. Its just a fish ppl... Those who dont listen to advice just have to learn their own way through trial and error, and who knows what the outcome may be. (IM NOT SAYING I SUPPORT THIS IN ANY WAY, JMO) I just think ppl should do what they want. Thats all a part of this hobby, and you obviously arent going to believe ppl until you try.

i see your point, but we are all doing this, sticking an animal that has the whole ocean to swim then putting them into a little tank.

yeah well i have to whole world to run around in but i pretty much stick to a two mile area around my house. not every fish needs a gagillion gallons to thrive.

pretty unedjucated remark...ever heard of aquacultured fish? im almost positive that 80% of fish are bred in "tanks", very little are caught from the ocean

I agree. I think that the OP has gotten his answer. There is no reason for people to continue arguing in circles IMO.
vgl12, feel free to start another post and ask us any other questions that you may have. Tang threads, particularly when talking about one in a small tank, tend to go nowhere and become offensive.
