My nitrates have been 140+ for over a month now and wont go down and i think ive tried everything but my fish and cleaner crew are all fine? I am planning to set-up a refugeum out of an old 20g. The refugeum will sit on a build-to-wall self that is behind the main tank. I will have to move the tank about 10 feet so it is behind this shelf. My question is should i use all new water, 50/50, or use all old water when i set it up again? The fish, cleaner crew, and live rock will be in a 50g qt.
By-the-way the refugeum will only have caulerpa algea in it.
thanks for your time

Doh,
I suppose my first response is are you sure your nitrates are 140+ ?
Have you tried more than one test kit ?
Do you have a feel for what is driving them way off the scale ?
A refugium will help, but I would focus on the root of the problem first.
Moving the tank would be a perfect time to make any necessary changes to what may be causing these high nitrates.
What filtration are you using ?
UGF ?
DSB ?
Tell us more about the history of your tank ;)

well...i think the problem with the high nitrates is that i cured my live rock in my tank. The ammonia went off the chart and i think i didn't change water enough and the nitrates just kept building and building from all the ammonia. For filtrating i have a filstar xp3, lifeguard fbf 300, turboflotor hang-on, 60# lr, and a few powerheads(2). The tank is 80g and the fish are 1 lionfish and 1 niger trigger aswell as 5 huge 3" turbo snails.
Thanks
Jon
