It depends on what type of fish you have in there. Black works best for fish or inverts that don't like there reflections, like mantis shrimp. Hope this helps.

Paint is used but if you ever want to change it you are doomed. Go with the plastic blue backround and 2 sided tape the whole length top and sides (Keeps water from getting behind in case of accident or fish splashing). There are also good posts on this in the search section check under backgrounds for some other good ideas.

We spray painted our tank with glossy black color, gave it about 4 coats. I tell you it looks awesome, and the power head cords you can't even see because they blen in. With the black it brings out the color of the fish more imo. Have fun.

I haven't gotten my tank yet but I've seen it done on another and loved it! Instead of getting a background(which perosnally I think is kinda cheap-lookin) i'll be putting 2 layers of window tint film on the back-side of the tank(the reflective kind that isn't dark in color, more mirrored)....it lets you see angles well and makes the tank seem somewhat bigger or more open IMO. :happyfish

I went to kmart and got some shower linings(about $2 a pop)... One tan and one dark blue, then cut them to size and lightly taped it to the tank because they stick to the glass from the static anyway. I have the tan as the backround right now and its cool because it looks like my sand is extending into my backround.. May switch to the dark blue sometime for a change however the tan is really cool for now. i also put the blue backing behind the tan so you cant see anything through it...
