Backup generator

I was out shopping at the local HWS and they had a generator on sale and thought it would be good to have around just in case there ever was a need. Our electricty does not go out much. It has gone out once in the last 3 years and it was for 5 hours.
I just moved into a new house so I do not have any history. ***)
1) If I buy this thing off the shelf and never start it until I need it, is this an issue. Say it sits in the garage for 3 years.

If you worried about it look in the paper for one for sale,Ihave one sitting in the shed for the past 2 years never needed yet but its there paid 100 bucks for 4500 watts.About every 4 to 6 months i start it up and run it for like 20 min.

I was looking to keep away from starting it up. That is why I was thinking of getting a new one and never even put gas in it....

I would go crank it at least once a month for about 15 minutes, just to make sure things are going alright. You wouldn't want to find out about problems while you are rushing to get it setup.
I purchased a large generator (13KW) for the house right after Hurricane Rita came through and left us without power for a few weeks. This one will run off propane and will automatically start up once power goes out. So, next time we evacuate, I won't have to worry about the aquarium or our food going bad.
Luckily, I didn't get into the aquarium life till after the storm, so I did not lose anything there. Even though I wish I would have gotten into this sooner, I am thankful for that.

Letting it set even if new is an iffy situation. When we have outages they are for weeks at a time especially during hurricane season. We keep three gen sets here just incase, mainly due to the lengths of time power has been out. We keep em fully fueled up with gas that has had stabilizer added to it so it does not form varnish or go stale. Trust me on this, add a good stailizor to the fuel or the gen set is gonna let yu down just when yu need it. We use a product called PRI-G, and its a long term additive. We also store gasoline and we have gas that is just as good now as the day it was purchased and some of its been around here for over 2 years time. Its protected with PRI-G....YOu can get it at most Marine and boat supply stores or buy on line or even some auto parts houses carry it. ANother product commonly available is called Stabil....its a short term additive, and what they call long term is short term by PRI-G standards......We run all three gen sets at least one time every 30-45 days with a load on them if its nothing more than a drop light or two, and we run them for about half an hour or until they are warmed up and any condensation that maya get in them is heated and evaporated, then we top em off with fresh fuel with stabilizor and they are good until the next run time. Nothing worse than having a gen set and when you need it it does not work and most times its from condensation in the fuel syste,m or the carb is gummed up with stale gas or condensation created rust and has a valve held open.........Thats one reason if you buy one even new, it can get condensation in the crankcase just from temperature changes, and cause rust......Besides your warranty period would be over before you ever used it and usually its the initial 15-20 hours most problems will show up. You need to get familiar with the gen set before yu need it as then its not the time to be reading the operating instructions, nort is depickliing an engine that was stored for a time. Hopefully by April we will have the large unit here and installed thsat has been backordered, then we can get rid of one or two of the other gen sets. The main one is a 15K automatic system that runs off propane / or gasoline. No more draggin gout extension cords and such, power gopes out, and the gen set starts and provides power all automatically. Power comes back on gen set drops offline and shuts down.......Buy one and use it, and you won't regret it. View it as cheap insurance.
