Ok, Ive mysteriously lost a few fish in the past year or so and I wasnt really sure why. I blamed my blue-green chromis for the death of 2 flasher wrasses, but then I lost my red lip blenny and he completely disappearred. Then about a month ago I saw the legs of an unknown crab in a hole in one piece of LR.
Well about 1.5 weeks ago, I came home and saw that my foxface was dead and kind of sticking into the hole where the crab was. I screamed at the crab and grabbed some tongs to pull out the fish. The crab actually was wrestling me for the fish, which the front third had been eaten already. I was so upset.
Well it wasnt until today that I had time to do what was necessary to get him out. I had two large sps pieces on the rock and other rocks were using that piece as support. It was going to be a pain.
Well here are the pics of the surgery. I actually broke a small piece of the hole to open it some more. I used a turkey baster to squirt RODI water into the hole to get him out more. Then after about 20 min, he came out far enough for me to grab with tongs.
I believe it was a stone crab of some sort. Unfortunately the last pic is a little fuzzy, but you can tell what he looks like for future reference.
Im frustrated but very excited because I was not going to be replacing any of the lost fish until I knew what was killing them. So now I get to do some fish shopping.
