Bak Pak 2 Or 2r?

just wondering what you guys think about the 2 cpr hang on skimmers...the bak pak2 and the bak pak 2R. according to cpr, the bak pak 2 is both "protein skimmer and biologcal filtration unit". the 2R is "designed for use in reef tanks in which biological filtration is not desired". my tank is a 40 gallon, has about 45-50 lbs of live rock and my wet/dry has bio balls .
if i want to eventually go reef, do you think i should get the 2 or the 2R?

I run the 2R on my 29g, and use no mechanical filtration. It works great. I think you'd be fine with the 2R if you have the LS and LR you mention.
And you are all ready running a filter, so you don't need more.

I used the 2 with the reef modification and it worked fine. I later purchased the 2R and it works a little better, but not that much better. If you have no other filtration and are using a fish only tank, go with the 2 and buy the modification later. If you have other filtration and plan on going with a reef later, buy the 2R. It's a little more efficient at trapping bubbles and breaks up the bubbles better before they return to the tank.

I second the 2r. I have it and have had no problems with it. The bio bale with the 2 can be a pain in the rear.

What is the modification for the 2? I have the 2 with the blue bio media in it. So I was just woundering what the modification was to it?

not sure exactly, but from a visual perspective, the 2R doesnt have the bio media in it(the blue stuff...). not sure of any other differences, if the water flows in all the same ways...havent seen both at the same time to compare them...anyone else know? if i do have a 2, can i just take out all the blue stuff???

In place of the biomedia is a baffle tower that drops into the return side of the skimmer. I'm assuming that this is what your question relates to.

The Bak-Paksm Bubble Trap is perfect when using the Berlin Method. Simply remove the Bio-BaleTM, insert the Bubble Trap and tighten the screw to completely eliminate bubbles escaping back into your aquarium

That is what I need. :D
Is that what you use? I have a problem with the bubbles going into my tank. So this should be the answer. :D

That will work or the new bubble trap will work. I have the 2r and had problems with bubbles when I added anything.

You can replace the biobale on the 2 with the bubble trap, but I know the 2R produces less bubbles to begin with. If you know that is where you are heading anyway, why spend the same money for the 2, and then pay more to add a bubble trap?
My 2R only produces bubbles when I add supplements to the tank. Other than that, it is crystal clear.

I already have the 2. I have had it for a while now. Where I ammostly getting bubbles is in the out pipe at the elbow where the water comes down and hits the elbow and when it hits it hits the water in the tank and couses bubbles. I am also getting a few little ones that come out more.

The 2R will return fewer bubbles to the tank, but I need the bubble trap on both to completely eliminate them, even with the modification.

The bubbles just generally look bad. Plus they will get stuck on any algae, rocks or plant that you have in your tank. I do not know if there is any harm done with the bubbles. I think it is more an asthetic thing.

The bubbles are bad. They can stress the fish out plus they can get lodged into the oral cavity of corals and rupture. (like a human aneurisum)
