It is not the same for this species. The female will have a more rounded face, where as the bottom jaw of the male is more blocked. This is due to the fact the he will carry the eggs in his mouth. Unless they are bigger than 1.5 inches, and closer to 2 inches it is very hard to tell the difference. It has been said that the males banner also stands at a higher angle, and is longer than the females. I will go with the longer, as long as they keep out of the rocks (thye rocks tear that thing up a lot), but not so much on the different angle. I have a pair that is currently holding eggs again for the 13th time. He has yet to raise a batch to the point where he releases them. It is a little disheartening. But a proper diet is key, as well as a very stress free environment.
