Bark collars

I would like to know if anyone has had any success with bark collars. We can hardly let our dog out anymore because she barks like crazy at anything (even if it's only in her imagination). She is driving me nuts! And I'm sure my neighbors don't appreciate it either...

the one I tried was by the same company that makes the underground fences. it didn't work.
I tried it years ago when I had a golden retriever puppy. she would bark and the collar would shriek. she would stop long enough to try and figure out where the shriek was coming from, then go back to barking. it was kind of amusing to watch, but it didn't solve the barking problem.

My sister rescued a pomeranian female that constantly barked. She used the citronella collar and it helped ALOT. After a while she took it off her dog. She still barked a little, but that is to be expected. Dogs do bark. When she first got her she barked at everything and at nothing, as you are describing. After the collar it was only if someone pulled into the driveway, or knocked on the door you know, the things dogs are supposed to bark at. I would try one for your dog. I realy hate the zap kind of collars just because. The citronella one is just a smell they don't like, not electricution.

it worked too good for me where my dog wouldn't bark if someone was at the door so i had to teach her now she still doesn't bark at anything except people at the door.

Yes they do work. We had a problem with our dogs barking at our neighbors and I asked on here what people recommended. A couple people recommended the bark collars so we went out and got some. They do work well.

Was it a shock or citronella?

some dogs bark. you will not stop it. shock collars are a good way to do negative reinforcement--the dog WILL learn that while that collar is on if they bark they may get shocked and will stop. but, once that collar is off theremight be nothing to prevent them from barking. the best way is simple training with positive reinforcement. make a command, a single word (quiet). say it the same way every time, no fluxuation in voice, tone, or loudness. if the dog doesnt stop barking, give a negative feed back, say with the shock or a choke collar. when the dog stops barking with the single QUIET command, give a biscuit or training treat and a LOT of praise/petting. they learn MUCH better from a mixture of positive and negative reinforcement and treats than just negative reinforcement alone.

Very true.

Just don't ever get the vocal chords cut! I have seen this before and I find it to be VERY cruel. I don't think you plan to do that anyway. My old neighbor got a shock color because his dog would bark all night long. I was studying at the time and I got to where I couldn't take it any more and had to say something. The owner was always out of town so he was unaware of the problem. Anyway, he used the shock color for a month or so and eventually didn't need it any more.

Yeah I don't really like the shocking ones niether. My GF's Dad had used one on their lab pup & it was kinda sad when ever he shocked her because the dog kinda made a wierd noise & it always hid behind the A/C unit when people were outside.

im sorry if someone mentioned this but i recomend a good dog collar or triple crown, same one, because unlike most they are made of plastic and dont do any permanent damage like the spike collars. we use one on my weimaraner and she barely barks any more and when she does u just pull back and makes it quiet and makes them stop after a couple of barks!

Our weim wore a prong or "spike" collar...they don't do permanent damage...the only time they CAN do damage is when people use them wrong, by facing the prongs on the throat...the prongs should ALWAYS be high on the back of the neck near the ears....and they are by far the most effective means of correction from a collar.

:hilarious Shocker collars are also very effective for buddies. A friend brought one in and we managed to convince a guy that they were throat microphones, he strapped one on around his neck, we told him that we needed him to check the range and to walk about 25 yards away before we zapped him. Yes they can be very effective. :hilarious
Or you can just get a dog without vocal chords, like the Basenji.
