I've pretty much rid my Corgi of useless barking. I just hold her mouth shut, look her in the eye and tell her no. She understands that it annoys me, and she stops. She's such a good girl. <3
...Though many times, I considered a bark collar.

i see where yer comin from but i don't believe in negative vs. positive reinforcement. i believe in just refinforcement. in other words, i don't care how healthy the outcome is because i don't have the time.
my dog barked for no reason throughout the ENTIRE night. and not constantly either. about 5 random barks each hour. so me, and all my neighbors, got to get woken up about 6 or 7 times in the night. not cool.
so i got the shock collar, it worked within a week, and could care less about any cruelty to the dog because the bigger picture is that:
1. i have to work in the morning
2. i don't work well on 2 hours sleep
3. neither do my neighbors
4. the rights of several homeowners supercedes that of a dog
5. shocks aren't life threatening. regardless if we deserved it, we've all been through physical pain before. it sucks but it's a part of life. move on.

I think this is a misconception, to my knowledge they don't actually "cut" the cords. I had to have this done to one of my dogs once, she was a non-stop barker and due to our housing situation at the time we needed to keep her in an outdoor kennel most of the time. We had her "de-barked" at the same time she was spayed. Basically while the dog is under anesthetic they scrape the ridges off the vocal cords. The dog still barks, but has no volume. Sounds like it has laryngitis.
I'm quite certain she was in less pain from the de-barking than from the spaying, so I see no cruelty in that respect. And if you think it's somehow "mentally" cruel, well believe me, the dog had no idea it wasn't making much noise. She still barked her fool head off all the time - LOL. She was a challenge to live with but in many ways a really great dog.

My maltese barks ALL the time. We bought a petsafe collar for him that makes a high pitch sound (doesn't bug us, but he HATES it) in 2 different frequencies in case one doesn't work. He is now where you can say no bark or just show him the collar with no battery and he'll sit there and do a pitiful groan that we guess is a suppressed bark lol

We have 4 moiniature dachshunds, 1 finnish spitz and a GSD as well as a wolf pup and over time we have trained them all to not park, or at least they willshut uyp if they are told to be quiet. Not a believer in collars etc, as all we have had to do was spend time and effort with each dog, and the soon got the idea...Now I do not expect the wolf pup to ever really stop as lots have tried and failed, but ata least a wolf doe snot bark at strangers etc. those situations just makes them much more quieter since they are normally shy and like to be out of sight anyhow. They are very talkative however with other dogs or wolfs if they get a chance, but are very quick to shut up to.
