Thomas,
Is hopkins right will it take that long? How long will it take for the base rock to become LR?
Taken from an old post of mine when I was argumentitive
Lets take a look at some base, cured and such terms about liverock.
The term cure is a slang word that is applies to the process of conditioning or cycling live rock (LR) for use in a saltwater aquarium. Cured means that it is live rock that has already been conditioned and is stable to use right away in an aquarium with minimal concern under certain guidelines. Another term often used in reference to cured live rock is seeded, as well as precured, fully cured or cycled. When you see live rock labeled as fresh, uncured or unseeded this means it is NOT cured and it shouldn't be placed directly into a main aquarium until you cure it. When it comes to transhipped labeling this usually means it is not cured, but in some cases a supplier may ship it in and precure it first, or may offer both types of transhipped rock for sale.
Alright it does take time, and I will concede that it can take more than 2 months. So lets look at the different stages and wording here.
You have live rock that is fully cured - take months, and could include coralline algea, sponges, worms, tiny inverts like pods, and of course bacteria and any form of other algeas.
you can have uncured live rock - this might be rock that has had die off and now smells bad and would be giving off ammonia and would be in need of recuring. There would be on this rock bacteria, some sponges could still be living on it, maybe some coralline aglea and other forms of algea. This rock needs to spend a couple of months (I know just how long I said to make baserock live) in a vat with a protien skimmer and a good scrub brush to get those dieing oganisims off.
Unseeded live rock - this could be the baserock that has been through a cycle of 2 months, this rock would have nothing except the benificial bacteria, and some algea.
Seeded live rock - to me this means that you have uncured or unseeded rock that is being seeded by fully cured ready to rock and roll live rock with all the benificial stuff we hope will some day be growing on our rocks. How long will it take for this other rock to look like the fully cured - Yes more than 2 months - but - it will still be live in 2 months time give or take and yes the more time you give it the better it will be.
Growing coralline aglea will take more than two months, growing sponges on you rock will take a while as well. Is your baserock going to be fully cured live rock that was plucked out of the ocean after 2 months NO, but it is going to be alive.
Baserock will become live just after a cycle, live with bacteria, then it should be seeded with cured liverock to get the feather dusters, sponges, coralline, pods, worms and other growths and critters in it. You could be up to 6 months to start to see coralline growth and feather dusters on the base rock, sooner or later depending on the wate conditions. It could take a couple years for it to look like preimium liverock. But it will happen.
