Base Rock??

I just added 12 lbs of base rock and I have a question..... since this is base rock I will not see any jump in levels or anything will I, no mini cycle or anything???
Another question about rock, I always read about everyone getting unexpected critters when they add rock, is that even possible with base rock or only with live rock.... I do not believe anything like that happened when I added live rock, but I was just wondering if it was possible with base rock??

If it is base rock like I have (aka dry rock???), then nothing will be in it. It will eventually become "live" after being in your system for a while. I don't think that dry rock will not cause your tank to re-cycle. There is nothing in it, it is just dried out.

At the LFS this was in a tank, but there were no lights on it, is this still considered Base rock, it was in the tank with LR and 2 stars 1 CC & 1 Brittle

It probably contains bacteria and some life then. How much live rock did you already have when you added the 12 lbs? How long has your tank been set up?

I had 15lbs LR when I started the tank.... it has been set up just over 2 1/2 months now (set up on Christmas Day)
Now I added another 12lbs "Base" rock

Sounds like you bought LR that was priced at Base Rock price. If it was cheaper, CONGRATULATIONS. If not, oh well. Since it was in the tank with LR and some inverts, you now have rock that may or may not be colonized with beneficial bacteria and possibly some other creatures depending on how long it was in the tank with the other rock.
LR doesn't need light to remain live, the only live part of the rock that needs light is the coraline (the colorful stuff), and that is not required to be considered live rock.

Thats GREAT.... thanks everyone
They sell the live rock for $6 - $7 per pound depending how much you buy...... I got this LIVE "BASE" rock for $1.25/lb
I hope they do not realize this is what they are doing, I may want to take advantage of it again sometime!!!!!
