Base Rock???!!!

HI
I want to have around 40 to 50lbs of LR and dont want to spend 99.99 on LR for only 20 to 25lbs!!! My friend said that there is a way to use BASE ROCK, whatever that is, and some how it will turn into LR or something
First of all what the heck is base rock?!!
Second what the heck is he talking about??!:confused:
Please HELP

I went to that web site and it told me all about Base Rock but i was also wondering if I got 30 to 40 lbs of Base Rock how much LR would you have to get for the Base Rock to turn to LR

I have a 40g long and was wondering if I put 50lbs of baserock and 10lbs of LR how long the baserock would take to become LR??!:notsure:

I would work, but you are probably looking at 6mo to a year before the baserock would be able to support the biological filtration of your tank. If you do it this way, then you need to have some sort of backup biological filtration (like the biobale in the CPR bak-pak skimmer).

if you point a power head at the live rock it will spread fast and if your water is good ie high cal 300+, alk 3.0+ and so on you should see some things after a few weeks
but it won't be live for a year or so

I just bought 60lbs from hirocks dot com... post your e-mail address and I will e-mail you a place where the same rock is cheaper... I also ordered 50lbs from them.

Also, What exactly is base rock?!?~This is prob. the newbie out of me... LOL I know i probably can't go to my lake cabin and pick up a bunch of pieces of rock and call them base rock, so where can I find it!!??!!

The base rock will become colonized with beneficial biological bacteria in a matter of weeks just like any biological media will. Now it will take a long time to get the corraline algae and pretty colors but as far as biological filtration it will take no time at all. Pretty rock biologically does the same thing as dull looking rock.
Base rock is just rock that has not been covered by all the corraline algaes and colonized by little critters that live rock has. If you want to save lots of money then you could make your own aragocret rock. Do a search on aragocrete rock.
