I was wondering if there could be any disadvantage to adding the dead base rock for sale on saltwaterfish.com to an established tank.

none whatsoever, just when it gets to you, make sure there's no smell to it. if there is, boil in water and sundry it

I don't know what kind of base they sell. I got my base from my fish distributer. It had baby feathers on it. I am going to go get more. It depends on what it looks like. There is no harm in adding it, but don't just add it in. If you have to boil it then..............oy I would put it in th qt for a few weeks just to see what came in on it and to be sure it wasn't carrying anything, but I don't know what you all consider base. Here is a pic of my base. I sold off half of it before I had a chance to bring it home.

i consider base rock as dead live rock. all mine was pretty well bleached out, and void of all life. if there's anything left on dead live rock, it should decompose and cause a spike which is why i suggested boiling, plus the dead bacteria may be a bad thing. Sep's advice on putting in a QT if you have any life on it is probably a better idea, something may survive being dried out.

I use a lot of that honeycomb limestone for base rock. It has large holes for the fish to hide in. They really like it. Lesley

There is a pic of the "base rock" on the saltwaterfish.com aquarium supplies page. Its under substrates. It is calcium carbonate rock and I assumed saltwaterfish had already taken care of the dead stuff on it. I dunno. I will email SF and ask.

you could get a spike and start a cycle. I bought base rock on line and added it to my QT tank. When I tested the Amonia level a day or two later it was through the roof. I'd soak it for a few weeks to make certain it was all clear.
