Base Rock

I am very new at the whole saltwater hobby so please don't crucify me for this question.

What exactly is base rock? I understand that they are pieces of LR that have died off and that you use as a foundation for your LR structure. I understand that it should be put underneath the substrate on the glass. But where do you find base rock? Is it any type of rock that you can buy from the LFS? Is there a better source??

if u do a search under reefrock, it should come back w a few site online that sell it. i bought a 50lbs of baserock a few months back online for $70.

base rock is "not living" rock. Meaning there are no living organisms on it compared to live rock. However, many people use base rock to put in their aquaium and seed it with a few pieces of live rock. Over time the base rock will turn into live rock. You can save money but it takes time.
