Basic Coral Questions?

Hey all,
So I just picked up a frag of some star polyps from my lfs for 5$ and I'm curious under what conditions and care should these flourish and spread, and will they spread fast? :notsure:
Also I have had a button polyp in my tank since it cycled (hitchhiker) should I be doing something for it besides providing light flow to encourage it to spread/split whatever it does? :notsure:

This is also a good coral to practice fragging skills as it's prety easy to peel off small section then glue it to another rock.
