Battery Backup

Does anyone use a battery back up for there tank.
I live in an area that the power goes out everytime the wind just thinks about blowing, and with winter coming and I'm at work all day I would like to have a powerhead that is on a battery back up so that if it does go out when I'm gone there will still be some kind of movement in the tank even if small but I'm not sure what is out there for aquariums.
I would love to hear any ideas.

I am strongly considering getting one, if only for the heater and at least one powerhead

Thats what I was thinking but there doesn't seem to be to many to choose from, I've been tring to research them but I've only found one for up to a 25gal tank and mine is a 125gal tank

If/when I get one, it will be the type we use here at work to backup our servers. The one that backs up my workstation can go 4 hrs at 540w.
If running only a heater and a powerhead, it may be able to go a day or more I think (haven't run the numbers yet).

Invest in a generator. Battery backups are great for short-term power outages, but if you had a storm or something and aren't sure when your power is going to be restored it's a whole lot more settling to have.

+1...I actually have a generator and a few inverters that you hook up to your car battery....But with all my tanks..LOL...I'd probably use all of them

I already have a generator but it will not turn it self on if I'm not home I just want something that will turn on until I can get home and start up the generator.

Computer power supplies is best look on newegg for one that fits the budget they can b expensive though.

I work about half hour away from home I'm gone from 7:30am until 5:30pm monday thru friday thats 10 hours a day away from home, if it was to go out in the morning I would not know about it until that night.
I cant tell you how many times I have come home from work and all the clocks in the house where blinking, so far all has been ok in the tank but it only takes once for it to be out to long.

I'm no electrician, so I don't know the technical terms, but depending on the generator there is a component that will sense/detect the loss of power and automatically fire the generator, and shut it down once power is restored.....My parents have that for their house.....Heaven forbid they wouldn't have AC.....

Again this is where a generator would pay for itself.....For the long power outages.....Power supplies or battery backups won't sustain a tank over a long duration.....

Again for the expense of a power supply a generator is just a more logical/economical choice as Wango & Meowzer stated!!!!!!

If you can afford it get a genorator. You'll also need a transfere switch. I'm not sure what the smallest you could get would be if you only wanted to run just a small generator but transfere switches aren't cheap. You'll need one to hook up to a generator that senses the loss of electricity and actually transferes or switches the circuit from off of the main power and transferes it to the generators power circuit. If you're not comforable with electricity then you should probably call an electrician to do this for you. If you don't use a transfere switch and hook the generator up to your power supply you could get back feed on the system if and when the generator kicks in. And that's not a good thing!

Anyone else here expeience the great midwest power outage of "03"? That sucked!
