Nope. Too much contaminants on beaches. Chemicals, tanning lotion, bugspray, ect. If you want live sand from an ocean, go out to where the water is it least 15 or 20 feet deep and get it from there. Use a small bucket and a rope to scoop it out from a boat....or dive for it!

While we are on the topic I have a friend that goes out most every weekend far out in the gulf of Mexico and dives. If I have him get some sand for me how long can it survive in say a five gallon bucket. It would most likely be next day before I could get ahold of it.
Should it then be cured out like live rock in a separate aerated container.?

I agree with Grog! Also you need to check local laws on removing it. Everywhere is different. I don't think it would hurt to be in a 5 gal. bucket for, say a day or so. Think about tide pools and how they have no flow coming in or out for a period. That's just my $.02 though.

You don't need a whole lot to innoculate your tank. A couple of cupfulls would work so you don't need a whole 5 gallon bucket filled.
Have him fill half of the bucket with sand, and the other with water. Keep it in the shade so it does not cook. Should be fine for a day. Just add it to the "regular" sand in your tank, give it a good stir and you are set!
