You can do ANYTHING you want to, but if you're asking if it's advisable I'd have to say no.
How big is your tank and how are you planning to haul a bunch of beach sand from Bermuda back to Staten Island ?
If it was my tank I would not use any beach sand from any beach.

depends on the type of sand it is aragonite would be great but silica not so. as far as life on the sand depends if its in the water or up on the beach either case give it a couple weaks (call it curing or whatever)before you put it in your tank! if it was me i would do it but i would (cure) it for a month or more. free is free we dont get to much for free now do we!!! :) :) :)

NOTHING IS FREE YOU'LL PAY FOR IT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER YOU MY THINK IT'S FREE BUT IF IT CAUSES ONE THING TO GO WRONG IN YOUR TANK THERE GOES YOUR SAVINGS... THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU WERE A YOUNG KID AND YOU PUT 1 PENNY IN A GUMBALL MACHINE & GOT 2 GUMS YOU GOT 1 FOR FREE RIGHT, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE TIME YOU PUT THAT PENNY IN & GOT NOTHING YOU THEN PAID FOR THAT EXTRA GUMBALL.
