Just like the bulldog thread, i'm looking to buy a beagle. I've heard great things about them on the web but wanted to actually hear from someone. I'm thinking of suprising my fiance with one for christmas. Anyone???

We have a 12 year old beagle named Betsy. We absolutely love her and she gets along well with our blue heeler and brittany spaniel. She's smart and will bark when she wants either outside or inside. The only bad thing is that she loves to dig holes in the yard when it rains. I know a lot of dogs do that, so that may just be a dog thing and not a beagle thing! I think a beagle would be a great choice. Good luck!

Beagles can be great lovable fun dogs, but they also have a negative side (not all do these but many do), they love to dig, they follow their noses and do not listen to owners (they run away a lot), they are pretty stubborn. They need a lot of exercise (I would say a fenced in yard is a must ) Lots of attention or they can become destructive in the home. Kennel train the puppy from the start!! . Also they can howl and bark a lot. Remember these are bred as hunting dogs and that is what they have in their blood.

My granddad raised beagles for hunting rabbits. Digging is an understatement!! He had to burry sheet metal three or four feet down, to keep them in. They also LOVE to climb! He had a six foot fence that curved over the pen, like a backstop, to keep them in from the top.

i made the mistake of getting a beagle and attempting to keep him in an appartment. Beagles need much more room to run and they do LOVE to dig. I did the humane thing and brough him back to the breeder and gave him back. I loved that dog but sometimes you need to consider if the dog is the best on for the environment that they need to live in - My beagle HATED to be alone and with my work schedule all he did was Howl all day long when we were gone

I currently have 10 of the beasts. Mom, Dad and 8 (soon to be 7 :( ) 1 week old pups.
I have never had a problem with digging but can tell you once the nose goes into gear every other sense goes dead. The male will climb the fence if I don't keep a radio collar on him. Most important thing you can teach them is "come" and "stay",

I have a 9month old 13inch(minture) beagle, Pennylane, and I love her to death. She is not bad about digging, but she loves to throw her head back and howl a bunch. She was a little stuburn about training, but I have heard that must beagles are.

Raiders and Beagles, It's getting harder to give you grief about your college football pics, but I am up to the task.

greatest dog I have ever known or owned!!!
I always would recommend the Beagle.
And while mine does dig, I just placed down to plastic chicken wire and I have had no more digging.
But they do need a place to run, they are a high energy dog, but not like a small rat dog high energy.
but you must be patient, bc the hardest part about a beagle is when they are a puppy, they can be very destructive. If you have kids, then it should not be a problem bc the house would be kid proof and therefore beagle proof.
As they get older, they calm down and are a great dog. most people return beagles bc they can't handle the puppy stage!
just get through the first year, that is all you need to do.
As I have seen a dramatic difference as I approached that year mark.
- i hope you get the beagle:cheer:

I have a 14 yr old beagle. Good dog with kids, however, they shed constantly, they will eat themselves to death if you let them. You need alot of room for them to exercise. They will drop their nose and follow a scent, and be gone. I will never own another one. They are hounds, and that about sums it up.

A new addition to my Beagle family! My girlfriend's three year old Pit had to be put down the other week because it had cancer
. It was a hard time losing a member of the family, but the lady that I baught my beagle from had a litter that was just old enough to sell, so I baught her an early Christmas present yesterday and now she has an almost all black 13" beagle named "Cash". I figured it would be hard keeping him in a box for the next couple of weeks.

My Beagle's litters have all lightened up as they age. My current litter has five that are nearly all a really dark brown and two with more white. The dark ones tend to turn reddish or champaign color like the dad which is cool. A couple from the last litter had his green eyes.
Bummer about the pit, those are great dogs.
