The rocks need to put on the bottom all the way to the glass so they won't tip/topple over and also you will get some die off in the LR and sand because it gets smothered.

Also it is unstable if you pile rocks on top and the sand may shift and cause your rocks to fall, either bust your tank or injure your inhabitants. That's why people use base rocks to built the bottom, laying right against the bottom glass and built up from there. I use lace rocks to built my bottom and put live rocks on top. :happyfish

OMG
i am so glad i looked at this...
i had my rocks on the glass...
then i moved them, causing them to rest on the sand
i actually moved them a bunch of times in a month span
and now my tank has been looking real crappy lately, with a lot of red algae i think
it is so bad that i traded in my trigger for an algae blennie to help it out
that didnt do much so i got new powerheads to help the flow
that helped more but now i need to get the rocks on the glass
thanks a lot guys

Ummmm ok I feel like I'm being brain dead and missing something really obvious here but once you pile up the sand around the base of your rocks won't everything below sand level not get any kind of flow and die off anyway? :help:

That's what the power heads are for, it's like sand against the side of your glass tank(sand against the side of the base rock). Then some critters to sift your sand bed, then there's no die off nor trapped detritus. Just my opinion! :happyfish
