Hey everybody... I am a total rookie to the saltwater fish thing. I have done the whole freshwater thing, and i want to move on to "real" fish. I am planning on starting a 125-150 gallon tank. I want opinions on everything i am going to need to make a saltwater tank work. Like i said, i am clueless right now and want some help. I am used to the freshwater tank with the hang on filters. The filter thing is what i feel most uncomfortable with. What do i use? To start, i plan on a very basic setup with live sand, some live rock, and maybe some of the hardier coral... Nothing too fancy for a while... :help:
no corals at first
but you need a skimmer, the best type of filter is a sump/fuge i believe, for the corals your gonna want some metal halides, lots of live rock not some, and cant remember what else...ill post when i remember
Welcome to the boards!! This is a great place to start for help. Check out 'The Conscientious Marine Aquarist' book by Robert Fenner. It is a great help and almost everyone here would recommend it. Live rock and live sand are a good start. I would recommend a wet/dry filter for your tank. Also a protein skimmer. Have you decided what kind of tank you want? Some aggresive fish will not be OK with corals. I also switched over last year from a freshwater to a saltwater, and these boards have been extremely helpful. Plase dont hesitate to ask any questions here. Just remember the only dumb question is the question that is never asked. Good Luck!!!
I am planning on getting a rectangle tank.. Still debating on acrylic or glass... As far as fish goes, i am planning on a ncie calm tank, just mainly fish like clowns and tangs with lots of crabs and snails... I've got the agressive freshwater thing now, and that just gets to be a big pain in the butt...

I would stick with the lights that come with the tank for now.No sense in investing in HO lights if you know you won't be keeping harder corals. I know someone who bought MH for a FOWLR just in case he decided to keep corals someday. He never did and now barely turns lights on cause its a waste of electric and his tank gets to hot. JMO
