Nikon D40 is an incredible camera. amazon.com you can find the package deal of camera, bag, tripod, cleaning kit etc for right at $500

I've taken lots of pics with a borrowed Canon Rebel XT 8MP. It used to be in the 800+ range, but since the 10MP came out, the price on amazon for the package (body, lens, etc) has dropped into the 500s. I'm hoping to get it one of these days.

I have the D50 and love it. Nikon stopped making the D50, but I hear that the D40 is nearly identical. It's a great camera for a beginner who would like the option of upgrading the lens later.

Yeah get a Canon XTi. Great camera. Nikon D40 is good too but I would recommend the XTi. Its more compact and lighter but they are both good.

Dang. I had no idea the price had come down so much.
I'm hoping for one for Christmas, but I asked for the 8MP... figured the 10 was too expensive and I'd not need the extra resolution. Maybe if I get it I'll trade up. We'll see.

Alright! Good choice, bullitr! Ask us any questions about it. I love it. Did you get black or silver?

I use NIKON D-70---I need to take a class on photography or read the 500 page book to learn all of the settings.

Try the switch!
I'm still learning to use mine. So far, I've figured out how to turn it on AND take a picture.
It's a great camera. Mines the 8mp. Any body know what other good yet not too expensive lense would be the best choice to add to this? For taking those upclose high detail photos(macros). I have no idea what lense to buy next for reef pics.
